Focus Home Interactive has acquired Dotemu, the studio behind Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. As a result of the company’s announcement, new remakes and remasters of old 3D games may be possible.
Dotemu is known for its excellent retro-inspired platforming titles. This is something Focus Home Interactive says it will be able to harness in the future:
From the press release:
Retro gaming is becoming more popular as the video game industry continues to evolve. Fans and nostalgic gamers alike are snapping up re-releases of old consoles, as well as adaptations of old games and mythical titles that make use of today’s technology. In this field, Dotemu has already created and rereleased legendary franchises such as Final Fantasy, Double Dragon, and most recently, Streets of Rage 4.”

Cyrille Imbert, CEO of Dotemu, stated that joining Focus Home Interactive Group was an obvious choice. Imbert added that the merger would allow for the remake of “first-generation 3D” console games. What does this mean for classic PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and SEGA Saturn remakes?
Focus’ acquisition of Dotemu will no doubt benefit both parties for a long time to come. Although the French studio has mastered the art of modern 2D retro aesthetic, perhaps it can revive some of the early 3D titles we all love.
